Customize your tiles

Make the most of your Windows Start screen tiles by adjusting the sizes, where they are located, and what is listed.
Move any tile by clicking and dragging the tile. While moving a tile, if you need a larger view of the Start screen move the tile towards the top or bottom of the screen to zoom out.
Use your mouse wheel to scroll left-to-right through your tiles.
Any Desktop shortcut or program can be pinned to the Start screen by right-clicking the icon and choosingPin to Start
.
In the bottom right-hand corner of the start screen is a magnifying glass with tiles, click this icon to get a zoomed out view of your Start screen. In this view, if you right-click on a group of tiles you'll be given the option to name group, which can be useful if you have a group of related tiles (e.g. games). In this view, you can also click and drag a group to organize your tile groups.
Create a new speed bump between tile groups by moving a tile to a speed bump.
Resize any User tile or Live tile by right-clicking the tile and choosing resize.
If there is a tile you want on your Taskbar, right-click the tile and choose Pin to taskbar.
Show admin applications on the Start screen by clicking Settings in Charms, click Settings, and change the Show administrative tools from No to Yes.
In Internet Explorer 10, you can also pin any of your favorite web pages to your Start Screen.

See our Windows shortcuts page for a full listing of all Windows shortcuts.

Know your hot corners

The corners on your screen are hot corners and give you access to different Windows features. Below, is a brief explanation of each of these corners.

Bottom Left-hand corner

The bottom left-hand hot corner of the screen will allow you to access the Start screen, if you're in the Start screen and have the Desktop open, this corner will open the Desktop from the Start screen.

Tip: Right-clicking in the left hand corner will open the power user menu.

Top-left corner of the screen

Moving the mouse to the top-left corner and then down will display all the apps running on the computer. Clicking and dragging any of these apps to the left or right-hand side of the screen will snap that app to that side of the screen. Each of these open app icons can also be right-clicked to close or snap.

Right-hand side of the screen

On the full right-hand side of the screen will be given access to the Windows Charms.

Taking advantage of search

The Search in Windows 8 has been significantly improved when compared to all previous versions of Windows. To search for a file or run a program in Windows 8 from the Start screen just start typing what you're trying to find or want to run.

As you begin typing, the results will start appearing on the left-hand side. In addition to being able to search for files and run programs, the Search also supports limiting the search to apps such as Finance, People, Maps, Photos, Mail, Music, Videos, Weather, and much more. If what you are searching for is not a file or program, click on the app you wish to use as the search. For example, if you were searching for "New York" and selected the Weather App you would be shown the weather in New York, NY.

By default, Search organizes the available Apps by how frequently they are used and then in alphabetical order. If you want to keep your favorite app at the top of the Search list, right-click the app and choose Pin. Pinning the app will lock it in place regardless of how often it is used. If there is an app you don't want (e.g. Finance) you can turn on and off any of the search apps through the PC settings, which is found under the Settings in the Charms.

Bonus tip: The Search is also found through Charms and can also be opened by pressing Windows key + F.

Running two apps side by side

Any app can be pinned to the left or right-hand side of the screen. For example, open the People app and then press the Windows Key + . (period) to move that app to the right-hand side of the screen, pressing the same keys again will move it to the left-hand side, and pressing the same keys again will make it full screen. While an app is pinned, any other app or program can be opened and loaded into the available space on the screen. For example, in the below picture, we've opened a browser window and have the People app running to monitor our social networks.

Any open app can also be pinned using your mouse by clicking at the top of the tile and dragging it to the left or right-hand side of the screen.

Bonus tip: The Desktop can also be pinned to the left or right-hand side of the screen.

Note: In order for snap to work properly your resolution must be at least 1,366 x 768.

Windows 8 Task Manager

The Windows 8 Task Manager has been significantly improved over previous versions of Windows. Some of the new changes include showing a total percent usage at the top of your Processes, which makes it easier to determine total memory and CPU usage, improved Performance graphs, a Startup tab to see startup processes and their impact to system performance, and the App history tab (as shown below) that gives you the total resources an app has used over a period of time. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to start exploring the new Task Manager.

Use a picture password to log into your computer

Windows 8 includes a new feature called Picture password, which allows you to authenticate with the computer using a series of gestures that include circles, straight lines, and taps. Enable this feature if you want a new way to access your computer or have a hard time with passwords.
Open the Windows Charms.
Click Settings and then More PC settings
In the PC settings window click Users and then select Create a picture password

Bonus tip: A four digit pin password can also be created and used to access your computer.

Take advantage of Windows 8 apps

Windows 8 comes included with several apps to help you get the most from your computer. Below are just a few of the included apps.

People

Microsoft touts the People feature in Windows 8 because they understand how many people are using social networks today. In the People feature you'll be able to connect your Windows computer to all the major social networks including Facebook, LinkedIn, andTwitter. Once connected, you can pin the people app and monitor your social network (as shown below), use People in Search to find people, and get an overview of what is happening in all your social networks.

Reader

The Reader app will give you PDF support right out of the box.

SkyDrive

The SkyDrive app will give you access to the Microsoft cloud service SkyDrive, which allows you to store your photos, documents, and other files in the cloud and access or share those files with any computer with Internet access.

Store

Take advantage of the Windows Store and install one or more of the thousands of available apps designed for Windows 8. The Store is found in the Start screen, or use Search to search the Store app for any apps that you are trying to find.

File Management Tricks

File Management Tricks

Rename a file quickly Right-clicking and selecting rename is not very efficient. Instead, simply press F2 while a file is selected to change its name. To alter the name of another file, type TAB without deselecting the current file.

Rename files sequentially in Windows You actually don’t need to download any programs to perform a batch file rename in Windows. Instead, you can select all the files you want to change, right-click the first one in the list, select rename (or use F2), and type in the name
. This will automatically change all the other files with the same root name with a suffix: (1), (2), and so on.

Select multiple files using the keyboard To select a bunch of files using your keyboard, you can press Shift + down arrow to select a single file or Shift + Page Down to select a large group of files at one time.

iOS 7 picture

Tuesday, June 4, 2013

Could this picture be the first image of the flat design Jony Ive is reportedly bringing to iOS7?

According to iDownloadBlog, the picture shows the home page of an iPhone running an alpha version of the new operating system. The authenticity of the image can not be verified.

It admits it is from a very old version and things may have changed.

If the image does turn out to be authentic, then it is evidence that the rumours Jony Ive is seeking to remove all signs of skeuomorphism and gloss in favour of a 'flat design' are true.

According to the blog, "When you look at the current state of stock apps icons, it seems that all of them were designed by different teams.

"Most of them have a different look. They don’t have unified features that tie them all up together. Some of them have a gloss effect. Some of them don't. Some of them have borders. Some of them don't, etc…

"From what we’ve seen, we believe Jony Ive's touch on iOS 7 will homogenize the look of Apple’s stock apps icons."

iOS 7 will be officially unveiled next week at WWDC

New apps YouTube Downloader

Monday, June 3, 2013

What does everyone want to do with YouTube? Why, watch it of course! And when can’t you do that? During bedtime scenes with a loved one? Nah, you can totally get away with that if you’re sneaky. No, the answer is offline – YouTube loves a connection.

This app is pretty self explanatory: you can download YouTube videos and watch them again later when you’re not so busy. However, while this is better than ‘Wallpapers’ (which seems to be made by the same app house but simply doesn’t work) it does have limited functionality
.

For instance, you can only download videos you search for, meaning any of the featured offerings are just frozen and unable to be tapped by your fair digit.

There’s also the issue that you can’t actually see the current top-trending vids. For instance, there was no sight of ‘Gangnam Style’ when searching the most viewed music videos… hello, a billion views people?

And there’s the actual viewing interface: you can’t look at it in the main media viewer of your phone, meaning it has to be done in the app… and you can’t scroll through the movie you’ve downloaded.

In fairness, when it works it’s an acceptable app – but YouTube downloaded doesn’t hold a candle to the likes of JetVD on Android.

HTC One running stock Android "imminent"

Reports suggest HTC may be planning to launch a Nexus edition of its flagship smartphone.........

HTC may be planning to follow Samsung's lead and launch a version of the HTC One running stockAndroid.

Reporting in Geek, Russell Holly claims sources have said HTC are working on a version of its flagship smartphone that will ship without its Sense software.

Holly added that a US launch is "imminent".

He previously leaked that Samsung was preparing to launch an stock Android version of its Galaxy S4before it was officially announced at Google I/O last week.

However, previous comments from senior HTC executives have cast doubt on whether a device without the company's Sense software would reach phone buyers.

Speaking with The Verge last year, HTC's chief product officer Kouji Kodera said that the company is "very proud of HTC Sense" and would "like to continue shipping it on every device".

However, Kodera was one of the many employees that left HTC earlier this year.

It is unclear if Kodera left because of a change in the the management of HTC's approach to Sense or for other reasons.

While the HTC One has been well received critically and by the public, sales have still lagged significantly behind those of rivals Samsung and Apple.

The company was also forced to admit it would be postponing the launch of the HTC First in the UK. It blamed poor customer feedback in the US for the move

Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini unveiled ahead of July release date

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini may boast a smaller screen and slightly lower specs but Samsung will be looking to offer a handset that has the same experience

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini has just become official ahead of what was believed to be its original unveiling on June 20th. This bite-sized Galaxy S4 was believed to be launching along with the much-rumoured Samsung Galaxy S4 Active.

Specs-wise you'll find everything is present and upper to mid-range. There's a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display along with the same small-bezel design found on the Samsung Galaxy S4.

Inside there's a 1.7GHz dual-core processor along with 1.5GB of RAM to keep it multi-tasking. Unfortunately (or fortunately if you disliked them) Samsung has removed a lot of the software features that came with the S4 such as Smart Scroll.

What you do get to keep however is the 8MP camera on the back and there's a 1.9MP front-facing camera for video calls. Storage is 5GB however you expand that via the microSD slot up to a significantly more impressive 64GB.

The S4 Mini has a UK release date of July and will be landing in the UK after Phones4U confirmed that they would be stocking the upcoming smartphone.

The S4 Mini is following on from the the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini, and whilst the S3 Mini received less than ecstatic reviews it would appear as though Samsung is looking to correct any and all shortcomings with this latest smartphone.

Vodafone 4G service rollout coming late summer

Vodafone has revealed a bit more information on when its customers can expect a 4G upgrade - and it's sooner rather than later

Vodafone has revealed it is planning a 4G rollout by late summer 2013 and has announced it will be investing £900m to bring together its fixed and mobile infrastructure in what it calls a "seamless network".

Earlier in the year, Vodafone bought £802m-worth of 800MHz broadband in the Ofcom 4G auction. The company also stumped up £1bn for Cable & Wireless Worldwide plc back in 2012 which will provide the fibre optics for the new infrastructure.

Now, with this added investment, the network looks to be pulling out all the stops to get ahead of rival networks like Three and O2 which will join EE in offering 4G coverage later this year.

"This investment is great news for customers and further evidence of our commitment to deliver our best ever network," said Guy Laurence, CEO of Vodafone UK.

"It is also great news for the country. We're investing in vital national infrastructure that can help play an important role in supporting growth in the wider economy," he said.

According to Ofcom, 98% of the homes in the UK will be capable of receiving a 4G signal by 2016, although at present, only the very latest flagship smartphones are capable of making the connection.

Vodafone hasn't been more specific about when in the summer it will launch its 4G offering, but perhaps it's right around the time we could be expecting a new, 4G-ready iPhone 5S from Apple?

HTC One Android 4.2.2 update brings new features

HTC One will apparently be updating its Android OS to 4.2.2 with HTC UI Sense 5.0, not the rumoured Sense 5.1, and other notably changes

According to a report by Android Revolution, HTC One users can expect an update from the current Android 4.1 to 4.2.2, but the date is unsure.

Some changes worth noting in the new OS update are the inclusion of a percentage battery icon enabled under Settings > Power > Show battery level, Android EQS (or Equalizer) controls turned on in the upper right corner of the notification menu, latest HTC update Android Daydream, long press home button operates as menu button, and a new update to Sense 5.0 being the removal of icons from the dock.

The long press home button usually operates as Google Now - the service telling you what's happening in life before you start your day, i.e. what you're doing, where you need to go, and how to get around. The service has recently been introduced on iPhone and iPad.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 started life including Android 4.2, while HTC One remained on 4.1 Jelly Bean, an upgrade at least from Android 4.0 ce Cream Sandwich.

The HTC One was unveiled earlier this year as the company's new flagship smartphone hosting a bundle of features including a 4.7-inch screen with a full HD resolution, 4MP camera, and two front-facing speakers for stereo sound.

Vine for Android launches

Vine may already have 13 million users but for Twitter that's clearly just the start as the inventive video-sharing app is now heading to Android smartphones

Twitter has now launched Vine for Android with the video-sharing app now available to download via the Google Play store for smartphones boasting Android 4.0+.

The app won't be as fully-fledged as the iOS version with a lack of support for the front-facing camera and some other missing features however Twitter has confirmed that from the outset it will have one key function that won't be available on iPhone: The ability to zoom.

Over the coming weeks Twitter will be boosting the app with more updates to bring it on par with the iOS version including support for the front-facing camera, hashtags and more.

Twitter has also confirmed that it will be working to bring features to the Android version which could only work on Google's operating system. Making a rare appearance in the blog post was Google's exclusive Samsung Galaxy S4 Nexus Edition

Using apps to improve you’re gaming

Since the mobile market took off and smartphones became an unrivalled commodity it seems that there has been an app invented to help with everything. There are more in depth calendars, ways to track your weight loss, apps to teach you how to play cards and even apps from specific shops so you can purchase on the move.
Apps to teach you how to play cards and casino games have come from the huge boost the industry has received since the invention of mobile gaming. Advantage blackjack is one way to learn how to become a master at the game and earn some extra pocket money at your favourite casino. Reviews have hailed the app as incredible with one user saying: “[it’s] everything you need to become an excellent blackjack player.”
If you’re new to blackjack don’t worry, as the app is specifically designed to turn novices and first time players into pros with the help of a little training. By incorporating basic strategy training and card counting you can learn all the skills you need and test your abilities during realistic practice games until you feel confident enough to play with your hard earned cash at a casino. Card counting is somewhat of a grey area with many casinos as it is not specifically cheating – not that we would ever condone such a thing – but it is frowned upon and generally disliked.
With options to tailor the game rules to those used at your local casino, it’s ideal to have open alongside your game for a few extra tips and tricks. These apps have become rather popular and some online casinos have started to cotton on to the fact that they are being used.www.galacasino.com is one of a few casinos that are not currently looking out for players using these types of apps.
There are two versions of the app – one free and one that is to be purchased. As with all things digital the free version is a slight downgrade of the purchased one; the paid-only features give you the ability to: count more than three cards at a time; simulate live play counting; simulate unbalanced counting systems; create counting systems defined by the user as well as being completely ad-free. Whether you want to learn a new skill or make a little extra cash, why not check out what other apps are available to improve your knowledge?
